Shom permanently collects and processes the information required for the purposes of navigation and then distributes this information, mainly as nautical charts. nautical charts are prepared by expert mappers, who analyse, select and compile data before producing a graphic summary: map information. Maps require a wide range of detailed information, in compliance with maritime regulations: bathymetric databases, wrecks, beacons, submarine cables, etc. They also require contributions from nautical experts, geophysicists, hydrographers and a specialised workshop able to process airborne or satellite images. The preparation process combines human expertise with the use of sophisticated IT resources. Regular updates to the range of nautical charts are intended to incorporate new information (new hydrographic surveys, new regulations, changes to beacons or port infrastructures, etc.) and ensure compliance with the applicable international standards.
Data are provided in compressed GEOTIFF format. The geometric precision of the Geotiff nautical chart is identical to that of the associated nautical chart. Data are updated as per the notice to mariners group.
